Sustainable Materials Advance Resources Transformation (SMART) group, led by Dr. Jinghao Li at Chemical and Paper Engineering department of School of Engineering at Western Michigan University, is seeking 1-2 high motivated PhD candidates.
The SMART group focuses on developing sustainable material solutions derived from natural and renewable resources for applications in packaging, construction, environmental remediation, catalyst, energy storage, and other fields.
We offer full financial support (tuition + stipend) for positions starting in Fall 2024, Spring2025, or Fall 2025. Your research will focus on one of these topics:1) Developing sustainable, functionalized packaging materials and composites from plants, algae, fungi, as well as forest and agricultural waste. 2) Developing natural polymer thermoplastics or thermosets aimed at replacing petroleum-based plastics. 3) Biomass-derived functional carbon materials and porous materials for gas/energy storage and environmental remediation. In addition to earning a degree in Chemical Engineering (default) or other majors (dependent on PI’s joint appointment), you will have the opportunities to:
Access facilities at collaborator’s lab at different universities and research institutions worldwide as a research assistant
Publish in high-impact journals and present at international conferences
Collaborate with diverse researchers

• BS/MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Natural Resources, or related fields (MS preferred)
• Interested in sustainable materials development with strong background in chemical and biological synthesis.
• Strong English skills: TOFEL≥80 or IELTS≥6.5
